INTRODUCTION

Aka: Angelus Obscurus, Ardjunity, Componisten van Overbodige Muziek, Dada di Musica, D'Archangel 2, Duke Daylight, Boy Engelhardt, H.H.H.Erlebnis, Henry Fortnight, Nul Kelvin, Panta Rhei, Karel Rubbernek, Ben Sudderbout, dr. Willem Tuimelhout, The Two, Anton Utrecht, Johan Wouters.

Former teacher of vision/sound-correlations and electronic music at the "Vrije Akademie" (Free Academy) of The Hague, producer/owner of a multitrack-recording studio in Amsterdam, and working as a composer for the famous Dutch theatre-group "Het Werkteater".

Founded various ensembles for improvised electro-acoustical music like The TWO, Dada di Musica and Panta Rhei, and is founder of the COM, the organisation of "Componisten van Oorspronkelijke Muziek" (Composers of Original Music) for whom he once performed the sensational composition "Solo for Bricks and Windowpanes" on Dutch television (showing the COMS's attitude towards certain organisations within the Dutch "modern music-scene").

His name as a controversial composer was defenitively established with "Muziek voor Koor en Orkest, opus 365" (Music for Choir and Orchestra), when 5 choirs en 5 orchestra's together with their families, neighbours and friends were listening (while eating, knitting or doing other interesting things) to his music, brought forth by a tape-recorder: the music is for and not by choir and orchestra.

He scored about 90 movies, AV-productions en theatre-plays, and his music was released on over 70 L.P.'s and cd's in Europe and the United States.

Today he is working as a movie-maker and composer for the COM Foundation on various art-projects. In 2013 he completed the movie “The Century Resonates Now”. Since 2015 he has focused musically on his Ultrakorg.

About Dada di Musica, The TWO, Panta Rhei

Dada di Musica

In 1979 he started his recordingstudio, also frequenty used as a rehearsel-room. Here he recorded demotapes from the Amsterdam popscene plus his own music for films and theatre. “Dada di Musica” sprung into existence in 1981 and featured keyboardplayer Willem Hagen (who was later to join Bart Terlaak of “The TWO”in “De Gigantjes”) and writer/singer/keyboardplayer Laurie Langenbach, author of the bestseller “Geheime Liefde” (“Secret Love”).

All three members of Dada wrote material for the group, performed on electric piano (Laurie), Fender Rhodes & Siel string-ensemble (Willem), and rythmbox, electric organ & Korg MS20.

Although the famous composer Vangelis was willing to produce their debut-album the group broke up for personal reasons, and their only released songs are “Radio Art”, the tune for the radioprogram by the same name of their discoverer Willem de Ridder, and “Dada plays Wahwah” on the album "Contactdisk 1" of Stichting Stopcontact (1982). The song "Flat Flat" was released on a vinyl-sampler of Anna Logue Records.

Laurie Langenbach died in 1984.

The TWO

Bart Terlaak’s fame as a rock-drummer had already been established, working with groups as “The Jumping Jewels” and “Carlsberg”. Their demotape, recorded on 8-track, aroused enough interest to let them re-record their material on 24-tracks for the album “Has it Ever Started” of the “Terlaak W Orchestra” (released february 1983).

A demo-version of the song “Love is not Enough” was released on AnnaLogue Records. Basic parts of this song were originally composed for the film “The American Dream becomes a Lovestory” of director George Schouten. Percussion, an extra Korg MS20-solo and the voice of actress Gerda Holzhaus were added to what could be called pre-house-music.

After the unsuccessfull release of "Has It", the TWO wrote the music for another movie of Schouten, "Een Zaak van Leven of Dood" (releasde on the album "Muziek voor Leven en Dood" on the Enfant Terrible-label.

The inital lack of response on both album and movie led to the collapse of The TWO. Bart Terlaak went on with the more commercial "Gigantjes", he performed songs of the album on Dutch radio with "Henry Fortnight" and teamed up for a while with Edward Ka-Spel (Legendary Pink Dots).

Panta Rhei

The collaboration with Bianca Holst (1955) started in 1976 after meeting at Psychopolis/The Free Academy, the well-known but obscure art-institute in The Hague, where he was teaching electronic music and film-editing. From 1985 to 1991 they used the name “Panta Rhei”, giving many live-performances with Bianca's expressive voice and synths, tapes and electronics.

Although many of their concerts were recorded, apart from a few short appearances on sampler-discs and -cassettes of the time there is only one official Panta Rhei-album: "Weird Duck"(1998, initially released as a cassette in 1988, COM Records CD02). Nonetheless they reached a cult-state in the Netherlands, owing to their music on VPRO-radio and a remarkable 1990- television-performance.

Fornunately one of their most remarkable concerts is available on Last.fm as a free downloadable-mp3. "It's a Wild World" was recorded in 1989 at de Wilde Wereld, a theatre run by students of the Wageningen University of Life Sciences. Bianca sang and used small stones for percussion-effects, he played his synths plus a Commodore 64 with his own Herosynth JJ64-software, turning this ancient personal computer into a double-joystick-controlled synthesizer-randomizer that produced nice random-drawings besides. Among his other assets were 2 cassettedecks with prepared tapes (mp3 52 minutes).

Bianca Holst studied at the Toneelschool Amsterdam to become an actress with Fact, Publiekstheater and Werkteater. Today she is a full-time singer and composer. More info on www.biancaholst.nl.
